Rioters facing police




A rioter gets medical help before getting arrested.




The riots kicked off in Tottenham on august 6th and then spread to Wood Green, Enfield Town and Ponders End. Later, it spread to Walthamstow Central, Islington and Oxford Circus. The riots then spread as far as Brixton, Streatham and even Croydon.

Attacks were carried out against the Metropolitan Police Service while local businesses were looted and set alight. At least 26 police officers were injured.

What caused riots?

A 29-year-old black man Mark Duggan was killed by police in a shootout on 4th August 2011 The shooting took place on the Ferry Lane bridge, next to Tottenham Hale station.As said by police mark was a cocaine dealer and member of the 'Star Gang'.Marks family and relatives claimed that he was unarmed when the shooting took place.

A peaceful protest takes a violent turn

On 6 August a peaceful protest was held, beginning at Broadwater Farm and finishing at Tottenham police station The protest was organised by friends and relatives of Duggan to demand justice for the family. Around 200 people participated in this protest.The unrest occurred in the context of tense relations between the police and the black community in north London.

Attacks were carried out on police cars, a double-decker bus and local businesses and homes from around 22:30. . Stores were looted by rioters after windows were smashed. A number of people were left homeless. Fireworks, petrol bombs and other missiles were also thrown at police.

On 7th august  in green wood,two miles away a widespread looting broke out in which around 100 youths targeted high-street game shops, electrical stores and clothing chains. Others ransacked local shops on Wood Green High Road.
